The ultraviolet light emitted by a lamp at 254 nm radiation has an enormous germicidal power that acts on the DNA of microorganisms that are on the surface of an object, modifying and preventing the DNA from reproducing. This effect is produced by UV lamps with inert gas and mercury particles inside. An electric arc travels through the inert gas vaporizing the mercury, which emits this UV radiation.
